Hobbton Students Explore Raleigh Foods Resources
Students from the Family and Consumer Sciences classes at Hobbton High School recently explored food production, food safety, food distribution, and food science during a day of tours and activities in Raleigh.
The students, who are all enrolled this semester in the Foods and Nutrition I course, first traveled to the State Farmers Market. There, they toured the buildings and grounds and observed daily operations.
Next, the students traveled to the NC State University campus, where they had lunch at Fountain Dining Hall. There, they also learned about the University’s use of local foods and use of dairy products from the University’s very own dairy cows and processing facilities.
Their final visit of the day was to NC State’s Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Science at Schaub Hall, where they interacted with professors, graduate students, and staff members and explored academic and career opportunities in food science. They also toured some of the department’s labs and observed research projects being conducted by the food scientists there. Their hosts at Schaub Hall included April Hix Morrison, the department’s undergraduate academic adviser; Ann Zielinski, the coordinator of the department’s entrepreneurial program; Haotian Zheng, a professor of food chemistry; and Gabriel Harris, a professor and the director of undergraduate programs. After touring the department, the students were treated to NC State’s Howling Cow ice cream while participating in a question/answer session with other professors and researchers.
The Hobbton students who went on the trip to Raleigh were Monserret Hernandez, Karen Anzures, Luis Perez, and Joshua Blanco.
The field trip was coordinated by Mary Kim Davis, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Hobbton.
